About The Homies!
The IDA-HOMIES are a hip hop dance group made up of 18 individuals with Down syndrome. Participants come together one time per week for an hour class to learn a routine, socialize with one another, and to share their love and talent for dance. The IDA-HOMIES are a performance and advocacy group. They dance at churches, games, and events. The purpose of the IDA-HOMIES is to show the world what individuals with Down syndrome can do and to teach others that they, too, can dance like no one is watching!
What is Down syndrome?
Technically speaking, Down syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21, is a genetic disorder caused by abnormal cell division resulting in an extra copy of the 21st chromosome. In our minds, it’s where an extra chromosome becomes a surplus of love. We feel this each and every day with our Homies.
Individuals with Down syndrome enrich our world with boundless affection, reminding us that love knows no limits. Their genuine hearts illuminate the beauty in every moment, teaching us the true meaning of unconditional joy and acceptance.
If you ever get the opportunity to get involved in the Down syndrome community, you’ll learn more about what it means to love than you ever thought possible.
Meet Our Founder, Brooke!
Brooke Johnson, the inspiring force behind 'Ida Homies', is not just a founder but a wife and a devoted mother to five beautiful girls. One of her daughters is blessed with Down syndrome.
Submerged in her love for her daughter and a deep-rooted belief that everyone deserves to live life to its fullest, Brooke was moved to create 'Ida Homies'. Established in 2022, 'Ida Homies' is a hip hop dance team specifically designed for adults with Down syndrome.
Brooke's vision and her tireless efforts have created a platform where these talented individuals can express themselves, socialize, and most importantly, dance like no one is watching.
